ANNA SlNKOWSKA

An alternative source reveals that the arrangement of the drawings collection based
on the five schools originated from the collector's time.In the file of manuscripts in the
Ossolineum there is a report by the same Łuszczkiewicz, in which he evaluates the
arrangement of the drawings collection, including mountings, that he had found in the
castle at Przeworsk in south-east of Poland.'^Łuszczkiewicz notes: '[the found drawings]
in boxes, resembling books [are divided into schools and within that mostly arranged
alphabetically according to the names of the artists.' Each drawing is pasted onto [blue-
]grey paper, surrounded by an ink drawn frame: 'just as it ought to be in a first-class art
collection.'' ^ Today, most of the drawings in the Wroclaw Ossolineum can be seen to have
been pasted on the same blue-grey paper, Earned with pen and ink and provided with the
main with Lubomirski's coat of arms (ill. 1).^ The inscriptions in pencil, also presumably
dating from Lubomirski's times, can be found at the right hand corner of mounting sheet,
consisting of a single number (or occasionally two numbers, if two drawings were pasted
oon one sheet) with the abbreviation of the school. The inscriptions in pencil that point to
the arrangement based on the previously considered five regional schools, are largely
similar to the pattern of the inventory of 1869.
The report by Łuszczkiewicz reveals that Lubomirski had put together his drawings
collection with the awareness of an informed art collector: 'here is a summary of the
schools, the numbers and the most important drawings. Italian School: 132 pieces,
Drawings of F. Vanni, F. Polidor - Bartolozzi [Ac] are original and important. Flemish
School: 70 pieces. The drawing of Quinten Metsis and an unknown draftsman from the
15th century (St. John m pen), pastel drawings by Denner en Bach (1787) are original,
much like others coming from the 18th century that belong to the German school. The
French School comprises 63 pieces, including drawings by Lancret, Boucher, du Jardin
and drawings made by unknown draftsmen, each being of value. The English School was
lacking in both quantity and art.'-^ Remarkably, Łuszczkiewicz makes no mention of any
other drawings, except for ills. 2 and 3 of the Flemish school.
The principle of dividing the drawings according to Artistic schools and artists was
promoted at this time by such French art scholars as the previously-discussed Roger de
Piles in his AA-egF <7u /u vm <7cy jOcAAey (1699), Dezallier d'Argenville (1680-1765) in
AhrqgF /a vm <7as* yFrryyhmcmjypcEEMrcy (1745) as well as Pierre-Jean Mariette (1694-
1774) in fJascvi'pn'o/? vorn/uuAc Fas* EaswcEw <7as* gruuoA Eras' <7 '/A/A, <2as* Ruus-Aus' A
The value of the drawings varied from 4 cents to 2,50 florins, most of the drawings being listed at between 10 and 20
cents.

ułożony mniej więcej alfabetycznie wedle autorów. Rysunek każdy naklejony na karton siwy, obramowany piórową
ramką, tak jak to po zbiorach pierwszorzędnych ma miejsce."
Most of the drawings are pasted on the original blue-grey mounting sheet, for example all nineteen drawings of
Marten de Vos. They are pasted in different ways, the drawings mostly with vertical images are placed on the left side of
the sheet, the horizontal drawings are placed on the uppermost margin and the double drawings are pasted completely.
