shis interest in art to become self-explanatory. Around 1826, Lubomirski was busy estab-
lishing the Lubomirski Museum at the Ossoliński National Institute in Lwów (at that time
a key city within the post-1772 Austrian province of Galicia, subjected initially to Austro-
Germanisation before subsequently being dominated by regional, in particular Polish, but
also to no minor degree Jews and Ukrainian, social elites).^ Collecting drawings was
undoubtedly a direct means of acquiring an overview of art history, and the knowledge of
the development of art and subsequently applying this knowledge with an aim to setting
up an art museum. The first half of the 19th century was marked by the growth of national
awareness throughout Europe, alongside the general European phenomenon of founding art
museums. Lubomirski spent considerable amounts of time abroad and undoubtedly followed
these developments.^ The prevailing view that the quality of art could stimulate the welfare
