relations between the Department and other Polish
and European academic circles.
The tenth anniversary of the Department of Art
History and Culture's setting up at Toruń proved
Professor WaźbińskTs plan to be successful. The
high level of academic teaching was confirmed by
successively obtained accreditations by the Univer-
sity Accreditation Committee, in 2002, while in
2006 and 2009 these were awarded by the State Ac-
creditation Committee. Furthermore, the most tangi-
ble proof of success is the ever growing number of
students to have graduated from the Department,
holding their master's degree in art history. Profes-
sor Waźbiński was the supervisor of many of the
master's theses, as well as the Erst doctoral disserta-
tions passed through this Department. In 2003, the
year of his retirement, while remaining an active lec-
turer until the last days of his life, he was awarded
with the Medal of Merit of the NCU; a symbolic ges-
ture of gratitude for 36 years of strenuous work for
the University.
*
For the academic community, Professor Waź-
biński stood for the highest Authority, the Master, on
the one hand, while, on the other, he was an Older
Colleague, a Friend, and, for some, simply Zygmunt.
Our sincere devotion, everlasting memory and cor-
dial gratitude may be expressed by a declaration

that, within the framework of our modest possibili-
ties, we shall proudly seek to carry on his work the
place that he created and most meticulously cared
for: on behalf of the Department of Art History and
Culture, with an aim to make it one of the most pres-
tigious academic institutions offering studies in art
history, and for the University in Toruń to become
a significant centre of research on the artistic
achievements of the Italian Renaissance.
The numerous letters of condolence sent upon
Professor Wazbihski's death (7 may 2009), both
from within Poland and all over Europe, revealed
the scope of his widespread recognition. Recollect-
ing their friendly relations with Professor Waźbiński,
whom the authors of the letters had met in Italy,
France or the United States, they not only underlined
his kindness and modesty but also described him as
a person endowed with charisma, a humanist of ex-
tensive knowledge who with firm conviction put into
practice his academic ideals. "His life - as Professor
Joseph Connors from The Harvard University Cent-
er for Italian Renaissance Studies at Villa I Tatti duly
wrote - was an example of complete and total dedi-
cation to scholarship, as his wonderful books reveal.
All lovers of Italian art are in his debt, and personal-
ly are proud to have known him".
