in Aglona was reconstructed in the 20th century, the interior of Vil,ani church was damaged
by warfare and altered later, while the interiors of other monuments underwent changes as
well. The information at hand as well as the analysis of existing churches still makes it
possible to delineate general tendencies in the development of spatial solutions of
interiors, their sculptural and painted decorations. Dominant traits of the epoch are found
also in the decorations of sacred premises in some wooden churches of the 18th century.
Chronologically, the Jesuit church of Daugavpils was the first masonry-built temple
related to the Baroque period in Polish-administered Livonia. The significant Jesuit centre
was founded here as early as in 1629-163(Ń, when a wooden building was adapted for the
Jesuits' needs and replaced by another wooden building in 1670-1674h In the 18th century,
the next church was erected; it became the centre of an expansive monastery complex. The
architect's name is not proved by any documents, although several hypotheses have been
around, mentioning both Karlo Francesco Rondelli and Francesco Bartolomeo RastrelliC
The only established facts are that construction was headed by Jesuit Benedikt Mezmer,
works were supervised also by the construction prefect Michael Lingnau^, the general
architectural supervisor was Jan Adam BorclL, and problems abounded during the
construction due to the complex technical problems. The church project was submitted for
