CAMPBELL DODGSON / SOME DRAWINGS BY MATTHIAS GERUNG

In the small, but very interesting, collection of early German drawings which belongs to
the library of the Austrian Museum for Art and Industry (Wien I., Stubenring), I saw recently
a hitherto unidentified design which is an important addition to the scanty collection of
drawings hitherto recognized as being Originals by the hand of Matthias Gerung of Nörd-
lingen (Fig. 2). The pen-and-ink drawing of Calvary (264 X147 mm.), Nr. 386, bears on the
front the collector's mark of Sir Thomas Lawrence and on the back that of J. D. Böhm (Lugt 271
and 1442), at whose sale in 1865 the Museum acquired this drawing under the name of Schäu-
felein. A pencil note "P. Lely" indicates, perhaps, that the mark of that collector is con-
cealed by the paper with which the drawing is backed. Another pencil note, "M. D. XLII",
gave me the first clue to the identification of the artist. For it is the original design, as I then
quickly discovered, for a woodcut (247 X145 mm.), which bears that date and the mono-
gram of Matthias Gerung, in the second part of an evangelical "Kirchenordnung" for the
Palatinate under the government of the Elector Otto Heinrich, which was printed by J. Pe-
treius at Nuremberg in 1543 (Fig. 3)1. The drawing is taller than the woodcut, though almost
equal to it in width.

Since both are reproduced here, it is unnecessary to go into much detail in describing either
the resemblances or the differences between the design and the finished work. It will be noticed
that Gerung left spaces blank both for the monogram and for the date which appear on the
