room. During the very successful loan exhibition
of Turner's works, recently closed, many of which
came on from the London Guildhall show, the
greater part of the city's own pictures had to be
stored away or hung in holes and corners, much to
the regret of visitors from a distance. Happily the
townspeople have just awakened to the fact that a
new art gallery, or some considerable addition to
the present building, is urgently needed. Whether

the members of the City Council would have lent a
willing ear to this demand is, however, rather doubt-
ful if it were not for the fact that they themselves
are just as much in need of new offices for the
various overcrowded departments of the Corpora-
tion ; and- so, gas and water brooking no delay, a
new art gallery, it is hoped, will be provided at the
same time. The Council has gone as far as pur-
chasing a very large plot of ground in Edmund
