THE pictures of Mr. A. J. Munnings have
a special interest for us at this moment,
when there is every prospect of a revival
of the subject-picture. That kind of pic-
ture was discredited only when it became
apparent to everybody that painters were
ceasing to select subjects for their own
purposes, that they might concede some-
thing to visitors to the Royal Academy who
could take no interest in art. 0 0

For his subjects Mr. Munnings generally
takes horses ; but he must not be imagined
as saying to himself: “ I will take horses
for my subject; some one else may take
bunches of flowers for theirs, or dogs or
cats or ships on the sea, according to
their taste/' A born painter of subject-
pictures does not choose his subject;
the choice is made for him where mar-
riages are said to be made. He finds
himself returning again and again to the
same theme, for no other reason than
that no other in the world has the same
