thus attacked the most subtle problems in
art. 000000
One of the few landscapes essayed was
that entitled Landscape with Figures, by
Mr. Archibald A. M'Glashan, a vigorous,
decorative effort that at once commanded
attention. 00000
Margaret, by Mr. R. Sivell, impressed
as a charming example of portraiture ; the
colour-scheme was fresh and pleasing, the
setting well calculated to concentrate
attention on the figure. A Portrait Study,
by Mr. James Miller, was striking in
draughtsmanship and tonality ; the artist
with colour-reticence expresses forcibly
the idea at the back of his mind. Mr. W.
M'Cance showed an effective study of
Mimi, in oil, limiting his colour-scheme
almost to black and white; while Mr.
Jacob Kramer's versatility was manifested
in three contributions, one of them an
impression of M. Kerensky, which, if true
to life, helped to explain the temporary

dictator's failure to create order out of
chaos. Amongst other portraits none was
more convincing than that of Mr. William
M'Cance, by Miss Agnes N. Parker. 0
In the Black-and-White and Water-
Colour Room there were some excellent
drawings by Messrs. Millar, Ferguson,
Cowie, Lamont, and Gentleman ; and in
the sculpture section the work of Mr.
Benno Shotts, Miss Agnes Parker, and
Mr. Israel Levine was specially attractive.

teens, has potentiality as well as purpose.
Its advent synchronizes with a fresh era, in
which originality, even efficiency, will be
counted of high value. 0 J. T.

German occupation condemned the
