example, a free version of this precise
Vredeman print exists with the constmction
lines preserved and a human figurę addedf
The third, and perhaps most intriguing,
Danzig object is a watercolour and ink
drawing on two pages of a sketchbook (iii.
5). This depicts a water pump and a
drawbridge based on folio 4r of Vrede-
man's treatise on the architectural orders,
Arc7//7ecJ//*<2, published in French and
German in 1577 and 1581 by Gerard de
Jode at Antwerp. The draughtsman has
extracted the central water pump, and
appended a calligraphic inscription on the
lower right of the second page, accrediting
Vredeman with the design of this structure,
but explaining that in his book he did not
elaborate on how it was to be built.^
The Danzig drawing appears in a bound
compilation of drawings dated between
1611-1632, all devoted to hydraulic
