were consistently according to school lor the first time."* Even Dezaliier d'Argenville made
use of a division based on merely three schools: Italian, Flemish and French. Dezaliier
d'Argenville based his distinctions, much like de Piles, on regions.^ The Italian school thus
being further divided in accordance with such major art centres as Rome, Florence, Venice,
Naples and Genoa, as well as Fombardy. The Flemish school itself was divided into lour
regions pertaining to increasingly distinctive German, Dutch and English schools as well as
the core Flemish one. The French school is named last, without further specification of either
region or city. Mariette also distinguished three schools: Italian, Flemish and French, divid-
ing the Flemish school between German, Dutch and Flemish masters.*^
