Cette explication ne serait qu'une hypothèse, si un exemple ne venait fournir le degré
intermédiaire entre la forme développée et la forme concise et abusive. Voici ce texte

In agreement with M. Maspero1 and Dr. W. M. Mùller2 I think it is incorrect
to translate the ethnie name as " Phœnicians ", but for a new reason.
In a note on the name of the Phœnix, published in the Agyptische Zeitschrift,
XLV, p. 84, Prof. Sethe says (speaking of the Greek représentation of the name of
the holy crâne of Heliopolis, the bennu (voc. *boine f) as *ofvi$) that " die Wiedergabe
von *boin durch das griech. *oîviij wird ein Seitenstùck sein zu der Wiedergabe des
unbekannten semitischen Volksnamens, den die Âgypter durch ^*_^m Fnhw wie-
dergeben, durch *o'Wç". And on p. 140 of the same volume of the Zeitschrift, he
speaks of Fenkhu as ''die bekannte Bezeichnung fur die Phônizier".
Prof. Sethe's hypothetical original of Fenkhu and #ofvi|; remains unknown, and
it may well be doubted whether it ever existed \ In any case, if the Greeks took
avéra foreign name as *otvtxeç, this name cannot have begun with an /-sound, and so
cannot in any way have resembled Fenkhu. For the Greek tp is original ly no f, but

but Canaanites like the rest of their ethnie relatives in Palestine.
