Mais c'est déjà la confusion avec l'abandon des vieilles traditions. De tout ceci
il y a à retenir : 1° les Thouéris étaient au nombre de douze ; 2° aux basses époques
il y avait quatre Meskhenit. ayant même corps que les Thouéris, mais figure humaine.
On fera bien désormais de distinguer ces deux déesses, et la statuette 39197 du Musée
du Caire aurait dû être cataloguée sous le nom de Meskhenit.

OB2. The renderings of Gr. and Masp.1 présuppose the wrong reading^^^j for
m and may therefore be dismissed without discussion. For sfh ssr-k there is a

good parallel in the words TmT <r=>^\ *_t\ I LK-i ' ' lay to rest (?)2 the bow,

loosen the arrow", Piankhi, 12, in an exhortation to desist from warlike thoughts.
The thought here too evidently is that Pharaoh should throw ofï for the moment his
bellicose nature, and show a peace-loving and clément disposition by pardoning the
exile Sinuhe. Sfh is obviously imperative as in the Piankhi passage, ancl it seems to
follow (1) that nft must likewise be an imperative, and (2) that the sensé of nft lb-k is
likely to be closely similar to the sensé of srm pd-t. The newly-discovered. text OB2
helps to support thèse conclusions, reading wfi 'b-[k] " relax thy horn". Ihad alrea-
dy conjectured that 'b " horn " is here metaphorically used for " bow " like Jj @\
( in Koller, I, 8 (on which see my note), and the variant wh\ i. e. a verb of which
the primary meaning is " to loosen" or " slacken " a rope, is strong confirmation of
my hypothesis. *=# in B is, as it stands, an unknown word ; I am strongly tempted

to read m; a rare verb for " to unfasten ", "unloose", cf.
