NOTES ON THE STORY OF SINLTIE

distinction. ^ ° ^can only be the imperfect passive participle (Sethe, Verbum, II,

§ 954), the pseudoparticiple from this verb being written à_in Middle

Kingdom texts (Sethe, op. cit., Il, § 135); the predicate of Ifw nb and the
following words is therefore ir(w) hrt-f im. — The word here written «^-^
riD must be identical with <~=> ^, as no other rwd denoting a part

of the tomb isknown; for'rwd "staircase", "shaft" the writing with w is sometimes

found, e. g. ^^^^^ P#r" 279c; ^^^Z] 1 1 1 Cairo stele> M- K->
20512, though the Pyramid texts already seem, curiously enough, to connect the word
with rd "leg", cf. ^ilij Pyr., 1090c. That rwdjneans the "shaft" of the
tomb seems decisively proved by the words ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ aaaaaa (j i

^__Siut, I, 308. "Staircase" was doubtless the original meaning, and in fac;

theburial chambers of mastabas of the lst to 3rd Dynasties are approached by des-
cending staircases. Later when the staircase was replaced by a shaft, the word rwd
was still retained, although its literal sensé no longer applied ; cf. our use of the word
"pen", Freneh "plume", etc.; so too the literal meaning of mr in B300-301 must
not be pressed, mastabas being more probably meant than actual "pyramids".

Translate therefore : "ail kinds of furniturc which are brought to the tomb-
shaft, its (i. e. the tombs) requirements were supplied therewith1 ".

understand the suffix of the lst. person singular.

means "estâtes" before the 18th. Dynasty, but is always a title.
