THE HERMS OF ST. MAURICE AND ST. URSULA AND THEIR AUTHOR

STANISŁAW DITRICH

SUMMARY

In the cathedral in Płock there are two silver reliquaries in the form of busts — the herms of St. Maurice and St.
Ursula, both Renaissance works created in the Cracow artistic milieu. They were inspired by Mediaeval legends of
the life and martyrdom of these two saints.

Both reliquaries were made by Stanisław Ditrich, aurifaber regis poloniae. His signature with the date 1600 is to
be found on the representation of St. Maurice. The coat of arms and insignia of the founder, the bishop of Płock
Wojciech Baranowski, are engraved on a plaque also found on this object.

The Płock herms are proof of the skill of Stanisław Ditrich, a court gilder and sculptor of the second half of the
16th century, who till now was known only from archival mentions.
