with incrustations in coloured lacquers
representing various fruits.
Fig. 18 is another example of basket-
work. In this instance the material
i, V" ^- V- - - I t, used for plaiting is thin strips of stag-
horn ; the hinge is of tortoise-shell,
and the fittings of silver. The interior,
like that of the previous one, is lined
with brocade.

is carved throughout—box, bead, and button—in

cracks at all, but only simulated ones. The old
mendicant carved in hard wood and ivory and
incrusted upon one side of the box, is crawling
upon his knees, supporting himself by a short
cane held in his left hand. Upon the opposite
side is a pine tree, the trunk being exquisitely
carved in a hard wood, while the foliage is in rich
green mother-of-pearl. Another box made of the
same class of wood is shown in Fig. 16.
