West zusammen, Altsemester aus der frühen Nachkriegszeit ebenso wie Studierende und
Lehrerinnen und Lehrer, die neuerdings an der Humboldt-Universität Latein studieren
Das Thema des Vortrags war absichtlich nicht allzu eng gesteckt, richtete sich doch die Antrittsvor-
lesung auch an eine interessierte Hochschulöffentlichkeit und an Vertreter der Nachbardisziplinen
(die neugeschaffene Professur ist im Fachbereich „Fremdsprachliche Philologien" angesiedelt). Die
Entstehung der noch heute gängigen Metapher vom Staatsschiff wurde vom Vortragenden durch
Interpretation eines griechischen Gedichtes an seinem Ursprung (Alkaios 46a D) und an aussage-
kräftigen Texten in Griechenland, Rom (u.a. Horaz, carm. 1,14) und innerhalb der Kirche (Tertullian,
de baptismo c. 12) bis in das moderne Europa (Bismarck, Churchill) verfolgt, auch mit Hilfe von Bil-
dern. Dabei wurde auch die Frage behandelt, ob und wie solche Bilder der Sprache Bildungs-
gegenstände des heutigen Unterrichts sein sollen. Manchem mochte der Bogen von Alkaios über
das Schifflein Petri bis zum Gedicht einer Hallenser Studentin aus dem Jahr 1989 vielleicht allzu
kühn gespannt erschienen sein; in einer Antrittsvorlesung bleibt freilich kaum die Zeit, um die
Metapher bei Theognis, Pindar, Aischylos, Sophokles, Euripides, Platon, vor allem auch bei Cicero
und Seneca im einzelnen weiterzuverfolgen In jedem Fall war es ein äußerst anregender Abend mit
wirkungsvollen „Denkanstößen" und Begegnungen Wesentliche Grundlinien dieses Vortrags lassen
sich übrigens nachlesen in der von F Maier zusammen mit J Gruber herausgegebenen Festschrift
für Klaus Westphalen „Humanismus und Bildung - Zukunftschancen der Tradition", Bd II (= Auxilia,
Bd. 28).
Internationale Platon-Gesellschaft. In 1986, a small group of Platonic scholars met for the first
Symposium Platonicum (on Plato's later dialogues) and formed the project of holding similar sym-
posia on a triennial basis. The second Symposium, on the Phaedrus, duly took place in Perugia in
1989. Düring this meeting, the hundred or so scholars present established the International Plato
Society.
The aim of the Society is to promote the study of Plato across the world, especially through the
Symposia themselves, through the publication of the Proceedtngs of the Symposia, and through
the dissemination of information about recent and current work on Plato. The Society owes no alle-
giance to any particular school or mode of interpretation. Full membership is open to any scholar
who has published at least one substantial article - or completed a doctoral dissertation (or equiva-
lent) - on Plato within the last fifteen years, and associate membership to anyone currently working
towards a doctoral dissertation (or equivalent) in this field.
The Third Symposium Platonicum took place in late august 1992, in Bristol, on the subject of the
PoPt/cus. The meeting, which was attended by more than a third of the current membership of
350, saw the launch of the first volume in a new series, /ntemadona/ P/afo 5fud(es.' dndersfand/'ng
the Phaedrus. Proceed/'ngs of the // Sympos/om P/afon/'cum, edited by L. Rossetti (Academia Verlag,
Sankt Augustin: 328pp., hard cover, DM 98,-). The series will include not only the Proceed/'ngs of
future Symposia, but also independent monographs on Plato, and reprints of books on Plato pre-
sently out of print. Scholars wolrdwide are invited to send their manuscripts to the President of the
I. P. S., Professor Tomäs Calvo, Universidad de Granada, Facultad de Letras, Departamento de Filo-
sofia, Campus de Cartuja, E-18011 Granada, Spain
All other correspondence, including applications for membership of the I. P. S., should also be sent
to Professor Calvo. The Fourth Symposium Platonicum, on the T/'maeus and Cr/'f/'as, will be held in
Granada in 1995.
