tion's antique prototype. The Lc/ogne o/Lńeodnrny
provided a source of inspiration, since the inscrip-
tion was a work known and widely known through-
out mediaeval Europe. Nevertheless, the small
number of portrayals of Heracles from this period
which might have served as an iconographical proto-
type and the lack of connections with antique presen-
tations of the hero and simultaneous enormous
similarity between the two vessels lead to the conclu-
sion that even if both bowls are not the work of the
same craftsman they almost certainly must originate

workshops creating such vessels existed in the area of
the Rhineland . If the given centre specialised in their
production there almost certainly would have ex-
isted in the same place a canon unknown to contem-
porary researchers for portraying the Labours of
Heracles. At the current moment the position pre-
sented amounts to no more than a hypothesis, al-
though it is to be hoped that additional vessels shall
be discovered adorned with representations of
Heracles that will help in removing doubts.
