Maroh 4, 1882.] PUNCH, OR THE LONDON CHARIVARI. 99

ARCADES JUMBO; OR, BR-DL-GH AND THE ELEPHANT.

(With a profound apology to Jumbo.)

Punch (to Barnum). “ Hail, Columbia ! An Elephant's House is his Castle ! Leave Jumbo alone, and Three Hundhed
Thousand Million British Childben, not to mention Billions of British Babes unbobn, will bless thb Hame of Babnum.
Take t’other instead, and vou will eabn the Gratitude oe all Pabties, even that oe the tbusty and very muoh-trted
Other One representing Northampton. Why, cert’nly ! Love to yourself, and America genebally. Vive Babnum !
FACILE PRINCEPS IN THE SHOW LlNE—BAR NONE. HAIL, COLUMBIA !—YOUBS TRULY, PUNCH.”

The Great Pooh-Pooh !

They asked him questions in the House of Commons ahout the
absurdity of the Ash Wednesday regulations with regard to London
theatres and the majority of London music-halls, and his answer
was, Let everything remain as it is: it is absolutely perfeet.”

They asked him about the Duke of Mudford’s and other similar
street obstructions in Gloomsbury, and his answer was still ihe
same—“ Let everything remain as it is: it is absolutely perfect.”
Answers like this are what have earned nim his title of the “ Seldom-
at-Home Secretary, or the Great Pooh-Pooh! ” and make many
Liberals think that the Government is not absolutely perfect.
