stylistic comparisons with work in other media, stone carving and wall painting, offered to
support the date of ca. 1300 that Wessel proposed for the box in Stuttgart.
As to the Ascension on the lid, Wessel pointed out that Mary in profile is found on
numerous examples ranging from the Palestinian to the late Byzantine period,
but did not remark on the significance of the fact that it displays this scene rather than the
Pantokrator that one would expect if the lid had been carved in the 12th or 13th century.
The Ascension is the climactic scene in the programme of decoration described by Leo VI
in his sermon on the church of his father-in-law, Stylianos Zaoutzas, who died in 899, an
account that tells of Christ, 'who made His way to heaven, to ascend together with His
