15 Broken Ties (Cut).—The negotiations for the renewal of
the Commeroial Treaty between England and France had
been broken of¥.

18 Murder Made Easy (Cartoon).— The reference is to the
careless manner in which poisonous drugs are sold, and the
ease with which the modern burglar’s favourite weapon,
the revolver, is purchasable. The case of Dr. Lamson,
who had poisoned his nephew, Percy Malcolm John, had
called attention to the careless dispensing of dangerous
drugs.

26 Tap for Tap (Cut).—Much angry discussion concerning
the AVater Supply of London had been going on between
Sir Edmund Beckett, Mr. Firth, M.P., ancl others.

i 34 Punch’s Fancy Portraits (Cut).—Sir Henp.y James
had the conduct of the Corrupt Practices Bill—which, how-
ever, dicl not pass this Session.

38 The Two Memnons-Jointly Noting(Cut).— England
and France had presented a “ Joint Note” assuring the
Khedive of support.

41 Punch’s Prize Medals (Out).—Lord Derby had indi-
cated his intention of joining the Liberal Party, Earl GrREY
having given proof of his practical secession from it—as led
by Mr. Gdadstone.

■42 A Cry from Christendom (Cartoon).-—The odious and
sanguinary persecution of the Jews in Eussia at this time
excited universal indignation.

50 “Attitude of M. Gambetta ” (Cut). — Gambetta, his
Scrutin de Liste proposals having been rejected by the
Chamber, had resigned. There had been much talk in the
papers concerning “ the attitude’ ot that statesman.

58 Ariadne in Naxos (Cut).—Mr. Oscar Wilde, the arch-
TEsthete, had started in the “ Arizona ” on a voyage to
Anrerica.

79 An Odd Pair (Cartoon).—-Mr. Henry Labouchere and
Mr. Bradlaugh, members for Northampton.

85 Adapted from the French.-—A M. Duverdy had
obtained an injunction against M. Zola from using his
name in the novel Pot Bouilli. (See “ What it may come
to,” p. 89.)

99 Arcades Jumbo (Cut).—The Zoological Society had
aroused great excitement by disposing of their huge ele-
phant Jumbo to Mr. Barnum. Mr. Bradlaugh at the
time was causing much trouble by his violent attempts to

take his seat in Parliament.



103 “ Obstruction ” in Excelsis (Cartoon).—The House of

Lords having voted for a Commission of Inquiry into the
working of the Irish Land Act, Mr. Gladstone in the
Commons had moved a Eesolution condemning its appoint-
ment. This led to prolonged debate and great delay in the
prosecution of public business. (See Introduction.)

Noise and Nuisance (Cartoon).—See preceding Note. 114

Jumbo in Chancery (Cut).—An injunction had been 123
applied for by Mr. Eomer to prevent the Zoological Society
from disposing of the elephant Jumbo, but it had been
quashed by Mr. Justice Chitty. (See “ Jumbo’s Lament,”
p. 125, and preceding Note, p. 99.)

“ God Save the Q,ueen ! ” (Cartoon).—A man named 126
Eoderick Maclean had fired on the Queen as she was
leaving Windsor Station. The incident had elicited warm
expressions of public sympathy. Her Majesty and the
Princess Beatrice had gone for a visit to Mentone.

Floreat Etona !—When Boderick Maclean fired at 130
the Queen, a young Eton lad standing near had promptly
dashed forward to the rescue. (See preceding Note.J

A Parliamentary Puzzle (Cut),—Mr. Marriott’s 166
Amendment to Mr. Gladstone’s Procedure Eesolutions,
condemning Cldture by bare Majority, after a long debate,
was negatived by a majority of 39.

The Man for the Post (Cartoon). Mr. Eawcett had 175
proved a great success in administration of the Post Office.

His schemes of “Keply Post Cards ” and a “ Parcels Post,”
had been generally welcomed.

Punch’s Fancy Portraits (Cut).—The great French 178
actress Mlle. Sara Bernhardt had been married to
M. Damala in a somewhat sudden and sensational fashion.

The McQuarium, or Lord Rosebery Piping to the 183
Fishes (Cut).—A meeting, under the presidency of the
Duke of Edinburgh, had been held at the Mansion House
to promote an International Eisheries Exhibition.

Signor Gladstonio—The Cloture King (Cartoon).— 187
The management of thedebate on the NewProcedure Eules
demanded great dexterity on the part of the Premier.

Punch’s Fancy Portraits (Cut).—Sir Donald Currie, 190
lateiy knighted, was the owner of the Orantully Castle,
in which Mr. Gladstone had recently taken a holiday
trip.

The TJnlearned Pig (Gut).—Mr. W. H. Smith had 195
given notice of a motion recommending an extension of the
purchase clauses of the Land Act, with a view to encourag-
ing the establishment of a “ peasant proprietary ” in Ireland.

This was looked upon by the Liberals as an attempt to take
the wind out- of their sails.

The Stirrup Cup (Cartoon).—In honour of the marriage 199
of Prince Leopold, Duke of Albany, youngest son of the
Queen, to Princess Helen of Waldeck Pyrmont, which
took place in St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 28th
April. (See “ The Eoyal Wedding,” p 215.)

A Bunch of Primroses.—The primrose had been the 204
favoured flower of the Earl of Beaconsfield, and on this
