Latin, Greek not to be underestimated, say philologists
Courses in Latin and ancient Greek should receive increased emphasis in schools as part of
general education, in the opinion of some 300 teachers of Latin and Greek who attended a
recent seminar of the Association of Classical Philology in Frankfurt. While technical
demands on pupils are increasing as a result of the growing use of calculators and Compu-
ters, the teachers agreed, the study of ancient languages can contribute significantly to the
transmission of tradition and history. Willibald Heilmann of Frankfurt cautioned against
abandoning traditions which are based on antiquity but continue to influence
Contemporary society. The opportunities for self-discovery as well as the “fruitful discus-
sion” that results from confronting the ancient writings must not be underestimated, said
Heilmann. In the last ten years, he added, the approach to teaching Latin and
Greek in schools has evolved away from the mental gymnastics of grammar and sentence
construction and toward a new emphasis on comprehensive analysis of texts as monu-
ments of cultural history.
