Among the possessions of the National Library in Vienna a painting was
found — tempera on fine canvas —, a half-length portrait of the celebrated
French Humanist, Guillaume Budd, who occupied an influential position at
the courts of Louis XII and Francois I in the first half of the 16th Century.
A MS. memorandum of Budd’s in the „Ädversaria“ (Biblothdque Nationale in
Paris), as well as motives of stylistic criticism give reason to believe that
the portrait was painted in 1536 by Jean Clouet, court artist of the French
kings from 1516 to 1540.
