Most of Mr.

pieces are cast

others, again,

them all runs the exquisite line
of design which has given Mr.
Jarvie an enviable reputation.
We publish this month two
excellent designs by William
Q. Tolman, of Concord Junc-
tion. The modeling shows a
thorough mastery of the grav-
er’s art, in which the artist
served a careful apprentice-
ship; and the designs them-
selves indicate a telling facility
in the formalizing of a nature
study to decorative purpose.
As will be seen, one example
is in the form of a title page
for the paper published by the
Massachusetts Reformatory,
of which institution Mr. Tol-
man is Instructor in Engrav-
ing and Clay Modeling. It
was first modeled in plaster.
The artist has achieved
considerable success in this
field of craftsmanship, and
recently designed a Yachting

sidered. The result is a piece
of work in which every detail
of the constructive design is of
constructive value, and no pre-
tense is allowed to enter in
with a plea for decorativeness;
of which the wood and all ma-
terials are selected with scru-
tiny and knowledge; and to
the making of which is brought
only just such mechanical as-
sistance as reduces the drudg-
ery to a minimum and sub-
serves the actual handiwork.
Quartered sawed oak is used
mainly, as being the best all-
around American wood. Some
pieces are made of black wal-
nut, finished au naturel in oil
and wax, which brings out the
handsome grain and color to
excellent effect. Where up-
holstery enters in, Spanish
leather, dressed by hand and
finished in a variety of colors,
is used; also tapestry, glanders
cloth, and linen. Rush-bottom
