The early Iconography of the Crowning with Thorns

43

21. Codex Egberti, Trier, Stadtbibi. cod. 24, fol. 83 v

Century, probably in St. Gallen, and is a copy of a Greek manuscript, with the text in Greek and with
Latin interlinear translation. In a stränge mixture of Greek and Latin the scribe has recorded the minia-
tures in the manuscript he was copying. The words in Greek are probably a transcription of the inscriptions
on the miniatures35.
Between the miniatures representing Christ before Kaiphas and Pilate and the Crucifixion are two minia-
tures thus described36: 1. The Lord dressed in a purple robe, with a reed in His right hand, and is grasped
by His right ear; and 2. See, the King of the Jews. The last description is in Greek and thus probably
transcribes the inscription on the miniature.
35 S. Beissel, Geschichte der Evangelienbücher, Freiburg 1906, p. 114; J. M. Clark, The Abbey of St. Gall, Cambridge 1926,
p. 110.
36 I have been unable to consult a transcription of the text itself. I am therefore quoting from the German translation given by
Beissel, op. cit., p. 114.
