10. Cathedral of Archangel Michael, Archangel Michael Monastery. 1653-6
10. Wielki Ustiug, sobór monasteru Michała Archanioła, 1653-1656
in aprolonged struggle among rival princes challenging the position of Vasily II (the Blind)
on the throne in Moscow. Ultimately, Ustug supported the winning cause of Vasily,
and gained still further importance as Moscow ’s main outpost in the northeast. With the
development of trade between Russia and England and Holland during the reign of Ivan
the Terrible, the position of Ustug as a river port achieved such importance that the town
added the epithet veliky (“great”) to its name. During the interregnum known as the Time
of Troubles at the beginning of the 17th century, the town, although damaged, repulsed
one major raid and subseąuently participated in the campaign that led in 1613 to
the enthronement of Michael, first tsar of the Romanov dynasty.
