A ces mots, le täleb bondit, se lamenta sur la perte de sa mere
et s’ecria: ,Coquin, archi - coquin!. pourquoi ne m’as-tu pas parle d’abord
de ma mere? Elle m’etait plus obere que tous les objets de ton sot
bavardage. Dis-moi de quoi eile est morte. — De Jalousie. — Elle

Bei dem Interesse, das man jetzt dem Drama der Jesuiten1
entgegenbringt, wird es nicht überflüssig sein, auf eine leicht zu
übersehende Notiz über die Aufführung eines Jesuitendramas in
Pondicherry im Jahre 1705 hinzuweisen, die der Venezianer Nic-
colao Manucci2 gegeben hat. Manucci schreibt in seiner Storia
do Mogor (in der englischen Übersetzung von William Irvine, Bd. IV,
London 1908, S. 211):
The Jesuits at Pondicherry do not give over the performance of
their extravagant comedies, one of which they produced the other day.
In it they represented a knight of good family who had married a rieh
and noble lady. By gambling and other dissipation he came in a few
years to the end of his wealth, and feil into extreme poverty. Oppressed
by his needs, and finding no one would lend bim any money, he had
recourse to the Devil. Satan lent him the money on condition that,
sbould he not find the wherewithal to satisfy the debt, he must make
over his wife in payment.
The term fixed having passed, the Devil appeared to demand his
money; but the knight, having nothing frorn which to pay the debt,
contended for a long time with his creditor. Finally he agreed to pro-
duce his wife at a place appointed by the Devil. In order not to break
his word the hu.sband enticed his wife away from the house on a pretext

Bei dem Interesse, das man jetzt dem Drama der Jesuiten1
