Furono dagli antichi erette talvolta
delle statue, si in marmo, che in bronzo
alle Attrici de’ publici teatri, ed erano
scolpite alla foggia di queste due che si
accennano, rinvenute ne’ scavi della città
d’Ercolano.
Si rappresentano le’Attrici in atto di
declamare : la più piccola di esse tiene
le mani supine, come se volesse persua-
dere pregando ; l’altra ha al fianco ripie-
gata la destra , ed atteggia con molta
grazia la sinistra, accompagnando col
gesto la parola, che sensibilmente è es-
pressa nelle sue semiaperte labra. L’ac-
conciatura della testa in ambedue è quasi
la stessa, ed hanno i capelli divisi : una
gli ha in parte ritorti col calamistro, e ri-
dotti in trecce cadenti sulla fronte, facil-
mente per diminuirne lo spazio , e rite-
nute da una specie di fascia o tenia che fa
fiocco in mezzo, dopo aver cinto con bell’
ordine i capelli; quali trecce, a foggia di
tubi, eran dette dai Latini spirati, e vale-
vano, come si è detto, ad impicciolire la
fronte. Altro volume di trecce pur cala-
mistrate scendono gradatamente sul col-
lo, scorgendosi chiaramente l’idea di far
pompa della ricchezza della chioma **.
L’attrice più alta presenta un lavoro non
meno sfarzoso nell’acconciatura della
testa, poiché i capelli calamistrati sono
anche da una fascia o nastro ristretti.
Sono vestite con manto, che è più lun-
go in una di esse, la qualeha i sandali ai
piedi.
Queste statue furono fuse in vari pez-
zi, e quindi riunite mirabilmente, si
che è ben facile il prenderle per un sol
pezzo.

Les anciens èlevèrent parfois aux ac-
trices des théâtres publics des statues,
soit en marbre, soit en bronze : elles
étaient sculptées à la manière des deux
que nous signalons, qui furent trouvées
dans les fouilles de la ville d’Hercula-
num.
On représente celles-ci dans l’attitude
de personnes qui déclament : la plus pe-
tite tient les mains levées comme si elle
voulait persuader en priant; l’autre a la
main droite repliée sur le côté tandis
que la main gauche , par un geste fort
gracieux, accompagne la parole, qui est
sensiblement exprimée par ses lèvres à
demi-ouvertes. La coiffure est presque
la même chez toutes les deux, et elles
ont les cheveux partagés : l’une les a en
partie crêpés par le fer à friser et dispo-
sés en tresses qui retombent sur le front,
ces tresses sont retenues par une espèce
de bandeau ou tenia qui forme nœud sur
le milieu. Les Latins les appelaient spi-
rai-, elles servaient à rapetisser le front.
Une autre quantité de nattes, également
frisées, descendent graduellement sur le
cou, dans l’intention bien évidente dé
faire parade d’une riche chevelure**.
L’autre actrice présente un travail non
moins fastueux dans l’ajustement de la
tête ; ses cheveux frisés sont aussi rete-
nus par un bandeau ou ruban.

The ancients frequently raised statues
either of marble or bronze, to the honor
of actresses of the public theatres, these
statues were sculptured in the style of
those here signalized, which were found
in the excavations made at the town of
Herculaneum.
The actresses are represented in the
attitude of persons declaiming: the short-
est raises her hands, as though endea-
vouring to pursuade by her supplica-
tions, the other places her right hand on
her side, while a graceful gesture of the
left accompanies the words which are
sensibly expressed by her half open lips,
the manner of dressing the hair is nearly
similar it is divided, in the middle, that
of one is partly turned by the curling
irons, and distributed in locks which fall
on the forehead confined by a sort of
band or tenia which forms a bow in
front, the latins called them spircethey
served to diminish the size of the fore-
head ; another quantity of locks, also
curled descend gradually on then eck,
with the evident intention of exhibiting
afine head of hair .’’The hair of the other
actress is arranged with no less trouble
and ostentation, it is curled and confi-
ned in the same way, by a band or rib-
bon, they each wear a cloak, that of the
one with sandals is longer than the
other, these statues melted in several
pieces are so admirably united, that it is
difficult to distinguish that they are in
more than one.
