Molto pregevole a giudizio degli intel-
ligenti è questo dipinto dell’ adorazione
de’ Magi. Al valente autoredi esso piac-
que porre la santa famiglia a ricevere i
doni de’ Magi, su’ gradini di un diruto
edilizio. Maria di bellissime forme di
sembiante angelico che spira tutto di sem-
plice santità, e che pareggia que’ molti
del Pinturicchio, dell’ Albano, di Guido,
porge il divino suo figlio agli umili
omaggi del più vecchio dei re. Gesù ha
nelle mani il vaso in cui gli è stato offerto
l’oro; e Giuseppe venerando come vec-
chio, e affettuoso come padre, guardan-
dolo tiene la mano sotto il vaso, forse per
alleggerirgliene il peso. Questo gruppo
che appartiene alla santa famiglia è bel-
lissimo.
Lo scorcio del Bambino è di difficile
esecuzione, di diffìcilissima imitazione.
A tal gruppo unir devesi il vecchio re
prostrato al suolo per baciare il piede del
nato Messia. Gli altri due re in più ricco
abbigliamento attendono l’istante di of-
frire i lor doni : Riverenti nel volto, ed
umili nella persona tutta han deposta
l’umana grandezza innanzi all’ altissimo
di umane forme vestito. In distanza veg-
gonsi i servi, i cavalli, i camelli, e più
lungi ancora s’innalzano picciole, ed in-
colte montagne.

Ce tableau de l’adoration des Mages
est d’un grand mérite aux yeux des
connaisseurs. C’est sur les degrés d’un
édifice en ruines que l’auteur a cru de-
voir placer la sainte famille pour y re-
cevoir les dons des mages.
Belle de cette beauté angélique qui
respire la pureté et l’innocence, et qui
rappelle les chefs-d’œuvre de Pinturric-
chio, de l’AlbaneetduGuide, Marie pré-
sente son divin fils aux humbles hom-
mages du plus vieux des trois rois. Jésus
tient dans ses mains le vase qui contient
l’or qu’on lui a offert, et Joseph, véné-
rable comme un vieillard et affectueux
comme un père, soutient le vase pour
lui en alléger le poids.
Ce groupe est très beau.
La partie inférieure de l’enfant offre
un raccourci d’une difficile exécution et
d’une imitation plus difficile encore.
A un tel groupe doit se joindre le
vieux roi, prosterné à terre pour baiser
le pied du Messie nouveau né. Les deux
autres rois, dans un plus riche costume,
attendent l’instant de présenter leurs
dons.
Leur visage annonce un profond res-
pect; l’humilité respire dans toute leur
personne. Ils ont déposé leur grandeur
terrestre devant le Très-Haut, qui a re-
vêtu la forme humaine.
On voit à distance, les serviteurs, les
chevaux, les chameaux et, plus loin
encore, s’élèvent desmonticules incultes.

This painting of the adoration of the
Magii is regarded by connoisseurs as
possessing great merit. The steps of an
edifice in ruins is the spot chosen by the
artist for placing the holy family in order
to receive the presents of the magii.
This picture shines by that angelic
beauty, which breathes purity and in-
nocence; and recalls to mind the master-
piecesofPinturicchio, Albano, and Guido.
Mary presents her divine son to the
humble hommage of the oldest of the
kings, Jesus holds in his hands the vessel
containing the gold offered to him,
while the venerable Joseph with all the
affection of a father, supports it, to di-
minish its weight. This group of the holy
family is extremely beautiful.
In the lower part of the body of Jesus
we observe a foreshortening of difficult
execution and of still moredifficultimita-
tion.
To this group may be justly added,
the old king prostrated on the ground to
kiss the feet of the new born Messiah,
the two others in more sumptuous appa-
rel await the moment of presenting
their gifts; an expression of profound
respect and humility reigns in their
countenances and attitudes, they have
divested themselves of worldly pomp and
greatness, before the most high, veiled
under the human form.
In the distance are perceived the de-
pendents, and camels; and beyond them
little uncultivated eminences.
