È sorprendente oltre credere l’effetto
di questo quadro : in ogni angolo di esso
vi traluce la verità. V’è rappresentata
una pietosa donna che esce di casa con
un pane in mano a soccorrere un cieco.
Questi figurato in un giovane guidato da
un gentil garzoncello, ha un’ espressione
sì vera, sì viva, che, al dire di Becchi,
sembre piuttosto una figura riflessa in
uno specchio , che dipinta in quadro.
Conviene asserire che in effigiarlo ab-
bia l’autore superato se stesso. L’ariadella
testa, il movimento de’suoi grandi occhi,
che spalancati cercano indarno la luce,
risvegliano la compassione in chi lo ri-
guarda. Si appoggia egli con una mano
ad una canna , e coll’ altra si tiene alla
spalla del giovinetto.
La fisonomia del guidatore è piena
di sentimento. Di lato alla donna è un
fanciullo che sta silenzioso.
11 colore del quadro è alquanto an-
nerito ; tanto però vi rimane per an-
noverarlo fra le più belle opere dello
Schidone.

On ne saurait trop admirer l’effet qui
résulte de ce tableau, tant est saisis-
sante l’expression des personnages. Une
femme sort de la maison avec toutes les
marques de la pitié; elle porte du pain
qu’elle va donner à un aveugle. Celui-
ci, sous la figure d’un jeune homme, a
les traits d’une si grande vérité, que
Becchi n’a pas craint de dire qu’on le
prendrait plutôt pour une figure réflé-
chie dans un miroir qu’un personnage
peint. Il faut le dire, Schidone s’est sur-
passé lui-même dans ce tableau. La tète
de l’aveugle exprime la souffrance ; le
mouvement de ses deux grands yeux,
qu’il tient ouverts comme pour cher-
cher un rayon de lumière, est plein de
naturel. D’une main il se soutient sur
un bâton, de l’autre il s’appuie sur l’é¬
paule de celui qui le guide. La physio-
nomie de ce dernier se fait remarquer
par le sentiment qui convient au sujet.
Tout près de là est un petit enfant dont
la présence ne semble pas avoir un but
déterminé.
Quoique la couleur de ce tableau soit
d’un ton un peu sombre, il mérite d’ètre
placé au rang des plus beaux ouvrages
de Schidone.

The effect of this painting is surpri-
sing beyond description, in every part of
it reigns a sublime and admirable verity.
A pious female is represented coming
out of her house, with a loaf in her
hand to bestow charity on a mendicant
under the figure of a blind youth led by
a little boy. So true and lively is the ex-
pression given by the artist to his sub-
ject, that we may say with Becchi, that
the figure rather resembles that reflec-
ted in a glass, than the production of
painting.
In truth Schidone has here surpassed
himself. The expression of the counte-
nance, the movement of his large eyes
wide open, eagerly but vainly seeking
the light, excite the compassion of all
who contemplate the unfortunate youth,
who with one hand leans on a staff and
with the other, on the shoulder of the
young child.
The physiognomy of the guide is re-
plete with sentiment. To the left of the
female is another child, who appears to
stand in silence.
Though the colouring of this picture
bea little dark, it may nevertheless be
ranked amongst the finest works of
Schidone.
