INTRODUCTION.

il manto di cenere e di lava, che nas-
condevate a’ raggi del sole, si penetrò
nel suo foro, nel suo teatro, nelle sue
case , mostranti ancora le traccio della
vita; detta l’avresti cita abbandonata
jeri dagli abitanti, all’ approsimar del
nemico fuggitivi. Sapienza ammirabile
della previdenza, che da una catastrofe
crea un benificio ! Due città si subissano
sotto un diluvio di fuoco, fra le viscere
della terra; restanvi occulte sotto un
suolo impenetrabile all’azion distruttiva
del tempo, e della barbarie, quindi, al
compiersi de’ secoli, l’uomo vi discende,
per rannodare la catena dell’ istoria, e per
far comparazione della passata con te
presente grandezza, ed insegnargli che
te moderna civilizzazione, della quale va
cotanto orgoglioso, non è che te reminis-
cenza dell’antico incivilimento, A Erco-
iano, e a Pompeja rinasce infatti l’anti-
chità. Piena di vita e d’azione presen-
tasi in quelle case, ove rinviensi te reale
esistenza de’ domestici focolari ; maschia
ed ingegnosa respira in quella monu-
mentale architettura, che illustra il tea-
tro , e la dimora degli Dei ; brilla del vi-
vissimo splendore del genio delle arti
nelle sue pitture, nelle sue sculture, e
soprattutto ne’ suoi ammirabili mosaici,
che il tempo sembra aver rispettato per
porli in presenza delle generazioni futu-
re, e portar loro una disfida.

tion dévorante du temps et de 1a bar-
barie , puis , lorsque les siècles sont
accomplis, l’homme y descend pour re-
nouer 1a chaîne de l’histoire, comparer
te grandeur du passé avec 1a grandeur
du présent, et apprendre que toute 1a ci-
vilisation des temps modernes dont il est
si fier, n’est qu’une réminiscence de l’an-
tique civilisation. C’est qu’en effet l’an-
tiquité renaît à Herculanum et à Pom-
peïa; elle est pleine de vie et agissante
dans ces maisons où se retrouve 1a réa-
lité du foyer domestique; elle respire, in-
génieuse et forte, dans cette architecture
monumentale qui décore les théâtres et
1a demeure des dieux ; elle brille de tout
l’éclat du génie des arts par ses pein-
tures, ses sculptures, et surtout par ses
admirables mosaïques, que le temps sem-
ble n’avoir respectées que pour les met-
tre en présence des générations futures
et leur porter un défi.

on the approach of an enemy, how can
we sufficiently admire the incomparable
wisdom of providence , which , from an
individual catastrophe , produces a ge-
neral benefit? Two cities are buried in
the bosom of the earth by a deluge of
fire, they remain under a soil secure from
the devouring action of time, and im-
penetrable to the incursions of barbarism.
And when time is accomplished, when
ages have rolled over them , man des-
cends to resume the thread of history,
to compare the grandeur of the past to
that of the present, and to learn that all
the civilization of modern times whereof
he so proudly boasts, is but the reminis-
cence of the ancient, in Herculaneum
and Pompeii antiquity appears regene-
rated, full of life and action it exists in
these houses, where we find all the rea-
lity ef the domestic hearth, it breathes
in that monumental architecture which
decorates the theatres and the temples of
the Gods , it shines in all the light and
genius of the arts, by the paintings ,
sculptures and above all by its admira-
ble mosaics which time seems to have
respected only, to bid defiance to future
generations.
