Questo quadro una volta nella colle-
zione Farnese, rappresenta la sacra fa-
miglia di Raffaele.
Maria siede accanto la madre, guar-
dando Gesù, che tiene in grembo: sant’,
Anna con la destra solleva il braccio del
pargoletto, indicandogli di benedire il
Battista, che si genuflette; san Giuseppe
chiuso nel mantello apparisce, da lungi
venire dove riposa la sua famiglia. Nel
dipinto dell’ ultima maniera di Raffaello,
evvi composizione, espressione, disegno.
Tutto spira nella sacra famiglia grazia e
amore. Maria è nel più bel fiore di gio-
vinezza, modestissima come vergine, af-
fettuosa come madre, devotissima come
donna, e nell’ angelico sembiante vi rav-
visa ciascuno l’augustissimo mistero.
Che la vecchiaja si possa mantenere in
istato di bellezza sant’Anna, ce lo prove
sufficientemente ; crasi a Raffaele il
dimostrare la conservazione di una ce-
leste avvenenza ne’confini della vita :
a Raffaele, che scegliendo il sublime nel
basso mondo, seppe elevarlo al più alto
seggio dell’ Olimpo beato ; la verginella
di Nazaret e la madre sua ne sono la
prova. Morbidissime sono le mani di
Maria : e bella oltre ogni credere è la
mano di sant’ Anna. Ma rivolgendomi
sul Cristo et sul Battista veggo due corpi
di putti, e li veggo ornati di tutte quelle
grazie che rendono cara la fanciullesca
innocenza. Sorprendente è l’attitudine
del Cristo bambino in benedire, e mira-
bile altresi è la figura del Battista ge-
nuflesso, e beneditto dal Verbo, mentre
ad esso presenta il segno dell’ umana sa-
lute, del comune riscato.
L’edificio posto a decorazione è a basa
attica ; un’ apertura nel fondo fa credere
un paesello; e la freschissima verzuraa’
lati denota la dimora de’ personaggi
fuori dell’ edilizio.Tutto è consentaneo,
al soggetto, e scorgasi nella composi-
zione, lo spirito di Sanzio, dell’inarriva-
bile dipintore d’Urbino.

Marie est assise à côté de sa mère, re-
gardant Jésus qu’elle tient sur ses ge-
noux : sainte Anne soulève le bras de
l’enfant de sa main droite, en lui faisant
signe debénir saint Jean-Baptiste, qui se
met à genoux; saint Joseph, enveloppé
dans son manteau, semble venir de loin
au lieu où sa famille se repose. Cette
scène respire la grâce et l’amour. Marie
est dans la fleur de la jeunesse; on recon-
naît en elle la modestie de la vierge,l’affec-
tion de la mère, la dévotion de la femme ;
etdanssafigureangéliquese révèle néan-
moins l’auguste mystère. Ses mains sont
d’un moëlleuxparfait.La main de sainte
Anne elle-même est fort belle. La mère
de Marie commande le respect par sa
vieillesse et ses cheveux blancs. 11 n’ap-
partenait qu’à Raphaël de montrer à un
tel âge le charme si admirablement con-
servé de la beauté humaine, et de l’éle-
ver encore jusqu’à une céleste perfection.
Quant à Jésus et à saint Jean-Baptiste,
ce sont deux corps de petits enfants, pa-
rés de toutes les grâces qui font chérir
l’innocence de cet âge. L’attitude de Jé-
sus, qui bénit, est surprenante; admira-
ble aussi est la figure de saint Jean-
Baptiste, à genoux, et béni parle Verbe,
tandis qu’il lui présente le symbole du
salut du genre humain, de la commune
rédemption.
L’édifice placé comme décoration a
une base attique : l’ouverture au fond
laisse paraître un petit paysage; sur le
côté une fraîche verdure signale la de-
meure des personnages hors de l’édi-
fice. Tout est admirablement en rapport
avec le sujet, tout porte le cachet du gé-
nie de Sanzio, de l’inimitable peintre
d’Urbino.

This painting by Raphael was for-
merly in the gallery of Farnese, it re-
presents the holy family.
The virgin is seated by the side of her
mother, contemplating Jesus whom she
holds on her knees : saint Anne raises
the infant’s arm and indicates to him to
bless saint John Baptist, who kneels be-
fore him ; saint Joseph at a distance en-
veloped in a cloak appears to approach
the place where his family repose. The
beauties of composition, the force of ex-
pression and the correctness of the out-
lines in this masterpiece of Raphael,
are worthy of admiration. Grace and
love breathe in this scene. Mary is re-
presented in the bloom of youth, all the
modesty of a virgin, the affection of a
mother, and the devotion of a woman ,
shine in her angelic countenance, in
which we read as it were the august
mystery. Her hands are perfect models
of beauty, as well as that of saint Anne,
which is admirably formed. The mother
of Mary commands respect, by her age
and grey hairs to Raphael alone, belon-
ged, the tajent of producing at such an
age the charm of human beauty, so ad-
mirably preserved, and that of raising it
to celestial perfection. In the forms of
the infant Jesus, and saint John Baptist,
we discover all those graces which en-
dear the inocence of infancy ; the attitude
of the divine child is surprising; the
face of saint John Baptist kneeling and
receiving his blessing is full of grace
and nature ; he presents the cross that
symbol of the salvation of mankind that
sign of universal redemption.
