In un Bassorilievo in marmogrechctto
proveniente dalla collezione Farnese è
scolpita la presente scena del carattere
comico. Nel gruppo principale vedesi
fuori la soglia di una stanza un fami-
gliarein atto di rattenere il suo padrone,
che adirato vuol percuotere con un bas-
tone ritorto uno schiavo, cheper timore,
procura di sottrarsi ai vicini colpi, e
sventuratamente s’imbatte in un Lora-
rio ** o altro servo con flagello in ma-
no , a bella posta chiamato per istaffi-
ìarlo : egli atterrito nel fuggire gli si
stringe alla vita; il che forma un altro
graziosissimo gruppo. Una fancuilla che
suona dolcemente due tibie dispari, posta
in mezzo a questi due gruppi, compie
l’eleganza di questa bella composizione,
in tal guisa descritta dall’ intelligentis-
simo Giambatista Lunati,

erano alcuni rozzi uomini che avevano l’offizio di
battere e di legare; e i flagelli che usavano eran
di funi contesti, come accenna Orazio nell’ Epodo,
ode 4, parlando di Mena liberto.

SCENE COMIQUE.

Cette gravure reproduit un Bas-relief,
en marbre grec, présentant une scène
de comédie. Il fesait autrefois partie de
la galerie Farnèse.
Le groupe principal, placé au seuil
d’une chambre, se compose de deux
personnages; l’un , qui joue le rôle de
confident ou de domestique, arrête le
maître de la maison au moment où, un
bâton à la main, il s’apprête à frapper
un esclave : celui-ci se hâte d’esquiver
les coups en fuyant, mais par malheur il
rencontre sur ses pas un Lorarius **
appelé pour lui donner les étrivières,
qui tient le fouet à la main ; mais l’es-
clave tout effrayé , s’attache à lui et le
serre de son bras droit. Une petite fille
joue de deux flûtes d’inégale longueur.
Placée entre les deux groupes, elle est le
complément de cette charmante produc-
tion, dont l’explication est due au savant
Jean-Baptiste Lunati.

* Hauteur, 64 centimètres ; largeur, 49 centi-
mètres.
** Le Lorarius, selon Gèle, était chargé de bat-
tre et de lier les esclaves. Les fouets dont il se ser-
vait étaient un tissu de cordes ; Horace en parle
dans l’Épode 4, à l’occasion de Ména, son affran-
chi.

This engraving reproduces aBassori-
Bevo in greek marble representing a
scene of comedy. It was formerly in the
Farnesian gallery.
The principal group placed at the en-
trance of a room is composed of two
persons, one of whom acts the part of a
domestic, stopping the master of the
house, at the moment in which with a
stick in his hand he prepares to strike a
slave : the latter hastens to escape the
blows by flight ; but unfortunately he
meets on his way a Lorario * called to
give him the lash , he holds a whip in
his hand, but the slave alarmed attaches
himself to him, and arrests him with his
right arm. À little girl plays on two flu-
tes of unequal length; placed between
the two groups, she forms the complement
of this charming production , the expla-
nation whereof we owe to the learned
John Baptist Lunati.

* Height 1 palm 9 inches by 2 palms.
** According to Gellio the Lorario was char-
ged with beating and enchaining the slaves ; the
whip he made use of was composed of an assem-
blage of cords. Horace makes mention of them in
the 4 th ode of the Epodo in speaking of Mena
his slave set at liberty.
