VASCA DI MARMO.*
Elegantissima è questa vasca di marmo
rinvenuta in Pompei, e ricca, d’intagli
di pregevole lavoro. È superfluo il des-
criverne i veri ornati, potendosi agevol-
mente vedere nel monumento riportato
a bulino. Lasciando a parte i diversi usi
ai quali anticamente erano destinate le
vasche, sembra che questa che si è pro-
dotta, sia stata una fra quei vasi, che da’
Latini dicevansi Labra. Ciò induce a cre-
dere l’orlo di essa sporto in fuori a guisa
delle umane labbra. Aggiunge poi peso
a tale opinione la molta somiglianza che
ha con altra interessante vasca trovata,
non ha molto, in una bellissima terma
Pompejana, la quale per una iscrizione
in lettere di bronzo che la circonda, non
lascia alcun dubbio che sia una di quelle
che appellavansi col nome sopra indi-
cato.

Ce vase, d’une forme très élégante,
vient des fouilles de Pompeï. Les or-
nements sculptés sont précieux par le
fini du travail. La gravure les a fidè-
lement reproduits; aussi nous dispen-
serons-nous d’en faire l’analyse. Nous ne
parlerons pas non plus des divers usages
auxquels ces vases étaient destinés chez
les anciens; celui-ci était du nombre de
ceux que les Romains appelaient Labra,
sans doute parce que les bords étaient
saillants en dehors comme les lèvres de
la bouche; et, d’ailleurs, ce qui confirme
pleinement cette opinion, c’est que cette
vasque a beaucoup de ressemblance avec
une autre trouvée, il y a peu de temps,
dans les magnifiques thermes de Pompeï.
On y voit une inscription en lettres de
bronze, qui prouve qu’elle était du genre
des Labra.

The form of this basin is exceedingly
elegant, and the ornaments richly sculp-
tured are precious from the finish of
the execution. The engraving has so
faithfully reproduced them, that we shall
dispense from analysing them or spea-
king of the various uses to which these
vases were appropriated by the an-
cients. It appears that it is one of
the number called by the Romans Labra,
without doubt from the circumstan-
ce, of the edges projecting in the form
of human lips ; and a further con-
firmation of this opinion is, that this ba-
sin resembles one found in the magnifi-
cent baths of Pompeï, on which, an in-
scription in bronze letters prove that it
belonged to the species of vase named
Labra.
