VASO
Il vaso rinvennesi in Oria è distin-
gues! colla denominazione con manichi
a nodi. La ricercatezza della forma, de-
gli accessorj, non chedegliornati, rende
questo vaso degno della pubblica atten-
zione. Il labbro è adorno di ovali a ri-
lievo : i manichi, come se fossero più
corde, o tralci uniti, annodati, termi-
nano al di sopra in teste di animali : il
corpo è tutto striato in due distinti ran-
ghi di bacellature : li divide una zona e
su di essa è dipinto un fogliame, nel
mezzo un cigno ; nella base a simplici
tratti di pennello è replicato l’ornato del
labbro superiore. Fra due tralci di vite
evvi nel collo espresso un carro tirato
da quattro quadrupedi che corrono a ga-
loppo. Non sono nè tigri, nè cavalli ;
ma partecipano delle uno e delle altre : il
pittore vi ha posto dell’ ideale ; un genio
alato regge colla sinistra il freno e li
guida -, colla destra armata d’ asta gli
sprona. Altro genietto afferra colla si-
nistra la briglia d’ uno de’ corridori ;
colla destra tiene una specie di tirso. Il
vaso è dipinto a bianco : i dettagli gial-
letti sono in fondo nero 5 il manto de’
geni di rosso a corpo.

VASE
Cette espèce de vase trouvé à Oria
appartient au genre Elmique , qu’on
désigne sous le nom de vase à anses
nouées. La singularité de sa forme, le
style agréable des détails et des orne-
ments le rendent digne du plus vif inté-
rêt. Les bords supérieurs sont ornés
d’oves en relief. Les anses ressemblent
à des cordes réunies et surmontées d’un
nœud ; elles se rattachent aux bords su-
périeurs par une tête d’animal. Le corps
du vase est sillonné par deux rangées
de gousses, que sépare une bande, sur
laquelle serpente un léger feuillage ; à
la naissance de ce feuillage on voit un
cygne. Le pied est entouré des mêmes
ornements que le bord supérieur : la
partie qui forme le cou du vase est
ornée de deux ceps de vigne, entre les-
quels est un char tiré au galop par des
quadrupèdes, qu’on ne saurait appeler
tigres, ni chevaux, bien qu’ils aient
quelque chose de cette double forme ;
c’est évidemment un caprice de l’imagi-
nation du peintre. Un génie ailé, tenant
les rênes de la main gauche, presse l’at-
telage de la pique qu’il porte à la main
droite. Un autre petit génie saisit de la
main gauche la bride d’un des coursiers
et de la droite il lient une espèce de
thyrse. Le vase est peint en blanc, les pe-
tits ornements en jaune sur un fond
noir ; le manteau du génie est rouge.

A VASE
This vase found at Oria belongs to
the class named etruscan, and is known
by the denomination of a vase with
knotted handles; the singularity of its
form, and the style of the accessories
render it worthy of admiration. The
top is adorned with an edge of ovals in
rilievo, the handles resemble cords uni-
ted and knotted at the top each termi-
nated by the head of an animal. The
body is fluted and divided in two parts
by a circle on which is painted a
wreath of leaves tn the middle whereof
is a swan. The foot is ornamented in the
same manner as the edge. On the part
which forms the neck of the vase is
perceived between two vine branches a
chariot drawn at full gallop by qua-
drupeds, which are neither tigers nor
horses but partake of the double form;
this idea is evidently a caprice of the
artist’s imagination. A winged geni
holds the reins in the left hand and
presses on the animals with the pike
that he holds in his right. Another little
geni seizes the bridle with one hand
while with the other he carries a sort
of thyrsus. This vase is painted white,
the little ornaments yellow on a black
ground, and the cloak of the geni red.
