uno de’ primi ad emergere dagli scavi
di Ercolano privo di testa e di braccia.
Lo scultore Tagliolini il ristaurò nel mo-
do che ora si vede. Somigliando in cer-
to modo ad un cammeo di Vienna in cui
è sculto Augusto divinizzato, determi-
narono lo scultore quantunque mancan-
te delle essenziali caratteristiche deter-
minanti il soggetto per esso rappresenta-
to, di divinarne la ristaurazione per un
Augosto.Siedesopra d’un trono, Augusto
tiene il bastone augurale o lituus, s’ap-
poggia a un’ asta, e l’attitudine è tale,
che assegnavasi a quegl’ imperatori del
gentilesimo eh’ erano elevati al novero
degli Dei. Dall’omero manco gli pende la
clamide,che daìmezzo insuil lascia nudo,
mentre è della più perfetta artistica intel-
ligenza il panneggiamento che Io ricopre
nelle inferiori parti della persona : il vol-
to esprime prontezza, audacia, scaltrez-
za, caratteri che si convenivano all’ ere-
de, e al vendicatore di Cesare.

Cctte statue, qui fut une des premières
déterrées dans les fouilles d’Herculanum,
était privée de tête et de bras.Le sculpteur
Taglioni la restaura, comme on la voit
aujourd’hui. A Vienne il se trouve un
camée qui présente l’apothéose d’Augus-
te, et avec lequel cette statue a quelque
ressemblance. Cette circonstance déter-
mina le sculpteur à faire la restaura-
tion pour un Auguste, bien qu’il man-
quât des caractères essentiels qui pus-
sent justifier ce choix. Auguste est assis
avec noblesse et dignité sur un siège
magnifique, l’olivier verdit sur sa tête ;
la main droite est posée sur le genou, de
la gaucheil tient et élève lebâton augurai
appelé, par les Latins, lituus, et l’attitude
est celle qui est assignée à ces empereurs
païens qui étaient mis au rang des dieux.
De l’épaule gauche pend la chlamyde,
qui laisse le milieu de la poitrine à dé-
couvert, et s’étend sur les parties infé-
rieures, selon les règles qu’indique la
parfaite intelligence des beaux arts. Le
visage exprime la vivacité d’esprit, l’au-
dace, la ruse, caractères qui convenaient
tant à l’héritier et au vengeur de César.
This Statue which was one of the first
disenterred in the excavations of Hercu-
laneum, was found withouthead or arms.
The statuary Tagliolini restored it as we
see it at present. There is at Vienna a
cameo which represents the apotheosis
of Augustus, which has some resem-
blance with this Statue, this circum-
stance detirmined the sculptor to repair
it as an Augustus although many essen-
tial characters were wanting to justify
this choice.
Augustus is seated on a magnificent
seat, his air is noble and dignified., a
garland of olive leaves encircles his head
his right hand is placed on his knee,
while in his left he holds the augurial
staff called by the Latins, Lituus, this
altitude is that assigned to those pagan
Emperors who were admitted to the
rank of gods. From the left shoulder
hangs the clamys, which leaving the
middle of the chest uncovered, falls on
the lower extremities in drapery dis-
tributed with that intelligence which
proves a perfect knowledge of the fine
arts. The countenanceis expressive of vi-
vacity ofintellect, audacity and cunning;
characters that so well became the heir,
and revenger of Cesar.
