VASO FITTILE.
11 vaso fittile da me prodotto è dipinto
con figure rosse in campo nero ; è uno
di que’ vasi vinari antichi, che si sono
osservali anche nelle monete di Arado.
Rappresenta da una parte una sfinge, col
corpo di leone e la testa femminea, tal
quale adornolla Sofocle. Cinta la fronte
di doppio diadema, con ali spanti, acco-
vacciala sul greppo d’un monte, con un
Sileno in atto di presentarle un volatile.
Dall’ apposta parte sonovi due figure
ammantate, una delle quali porge all’ al-
tra, ch’è diademata, un ramoscello. La
sfinge è bella nel viso, al naturale tratta
in sua possanza; main ogni parte, meno
il corpo, è tutta tempestata di piccioli
globi, chiari taluni, oscuri gli altri, e
semplici o immedesimati, che a prima
vista sorprendono. Il Sileno tiene nella
sinistra un tirso con nastri o fasce a cion-
doloni, mentre con la dritta offre un au-
gello alla sfinge. La testa è ombreggiata
da una vite.Cui sono attorte delle tenie,
e una fascia gli circonda la fronte. La
foggia degli abiti è curiosissima, e sulla
pelle ha gl’indicati globetti, creduti dal
Quaranta indizio certo dell’ irsuto pelo
che la ricopre : un picciolo ornamento
nuovo e bizzarro gli cinge il petto ; un
grembialetto d’irregolar forma gli è sul
davanti.

Sur ce vase sont peintes deux figu-
res rouges sur un fond noir. C’est un
de ces vases anciens qui contenaient le
vin, et qui se trouvent même sur les mon-
naies diArado.
D’un côté est un sphinx, au corps de
lion et à la tête de femme, comme les dé-
crit Sophocle. Son front est ceint d’un
double diadème; ses ailes sont déployées.
Il est accroupi sur une pointe de rocher,
et devant lui est un silène qui lui pré-
sente un oiseau.
De l’autre côté sont deux personnages
en manteau, dont l’un tend une petite
branche à l’autre, qui porte un diadème.
Le sphinx est beau de visage et de pro-
portions naturelles ; mais chaque partie,
sauf le corps, est parsemée de petits
ronds, les uns clairs, les autres noirs, et
simples ou doubles, ce qui surprend au
premier coup d’œil. Le silène lient de la
main gauche un thyrse avec des rubans,
ou bandelettes flottantes, pendant qu’il
lui présente un oiseau de la main droite.
La tête est ombragée d’une branche de
vigne, autour de laquelle s’enroulent des
bandelettes, et un ruban lui entoure le
front. Il porte un vêtement curieux ; il a
sur la peau les petits ronds dont on a
parlé plus haut, et que Quaranta croit
être l’indice certain de poil hérissé, qui
le recouvre ; un petit ornement nouveau
et bizarre lui entoure la poitrine ; il a
devant lui un petit tablier de forme irré-
gulière.

A FICTILE VASE.
On this vase are painted two red figu-
res on a black ground. It is one of those
ancient vessels for containing wine, and
such as arc also found stamped on the
money of Arado.
On one side is a sphinx, with the body
of a lion, and the head of a woman, as
Sophocles has described this fabulous
monster. Its head is encircled with a
double diadem; with its wings expanded
it crouches on the point of a rock, while
Silenus stands before it and presents a
bird.
On the opposite side of the vase are
two persons envelopedin cloaks, one of
whom extends a little branch to the other
who wears a diadem.
The countenance of the sphinx is fine
and naturally proportioned ; every part
excepting the body is covered with little
black and white spots which produce a
surprising effect at first view. Silenus
holds in his left hand a thyrsus orna-
mented with ribbons; while with his
right he presents the bird. A branch of
vine and ribbons are suspended over his
head, which is encircled withaband. He
wears a curious garment, and his skin is
covered with the same kind of spots al-
ready mentioned and which Quaranta
thinks, indicate his being covered with
bristled hair ; on his chest he wears a
little whimsical ornament, and before
him an apron of irregular form.
