However, after many discussions with the Freiich
philosopher Jacques Maritain, he decided to become a
priest. On the 25 th November 1926 Rzewuski arrived
at the conventofthe Dominican Friars -Saint-Maximin,
located in the South of France. This date ends his artistic
career, abandoned at the height of success. As a priest
(under the name Czesław) he directed, at first, in the
years 1933-46, the Albertinum in Fryburg and
afterwards, in 1946-51, the Dominican novitiate in
Toulouse. In 1951 he was nominated head of the Sainte
Baume hermitage and in 1954 chapelain of the nuns in
Prouilhe, where he lived during his retirement.
Rzewuski wrote two books - A travers !'invisible cristal.
Confessions d'un dominicain, his memoirs, published
in 1976 and rewarded by the French Academy, and
L'instant. Testament d'un dominicain, published in
1980. Aleksander Rzewuski died on the 13 th September
1983 in Venice, where he was buried.
