THOMAS GAI N S B O ROUGH’S DEVELOPMENT
BY R. R. TATLOCK
The Gainsborough Bicentenary Memorial Exhibi*
tion at Ipswich did not consist of a series of “show
pieces” but was intended to illustrate in a scholarly
waythe development of the artist’s style and accorn*
plishment. Therefore, there were included pictures by
Gainsborough frorn all periods as well as a number
by artists who influenced Gainsborough, by his
contemporaries, and by those influenced by him.
Gainsborough was born among peasants near Ips*
wich in 1717. When quite young he was sent to
London to study, but soon returned to Ipswich and
got married. At that time there were in and near
Ipswich many collectors of Dutch landscapes and
in his. early days Gainsborough painted in a tight
männer under the influence of Wynants, Bercham,
Adrian Van de Velde and Teniers the younger.
