TADEUSZ KUNTZE’S SECOND PERIOD IN ROMĘ IN THE LIGHT OF
MATERIALS FROM THE ARCHIVO STORICO DEL VICARIATO AL
LATERANO
Summary
Tadeusz Kuntze, a painter active in Poland and Italy
during the second half of the eighteenth century, is
currently attracting increasing interest both in his home-
land and abroad. Even while knowledge of this painteris
artistic career has been accummulating for some time,
innumerous questions relating to his life and his works
remain unanswered, while many details still await veri-
fication. One unsolved mystery is concerned with his
apparent prolonged stay in Paris during the years 1752-
’4, whether Kuntze really did receive the young Goya
as his guest in his Romę fiat in the years 1770-’l and,
above all, if accounts of Kuntze living in Spain in the
years 1759-’65 could be true.
A great deal of previously unknown information
concerning the life of Tadeusz Kuntze has been drawn
from the eighteenth century parish registers currently
housed in the Archives of the Roman Curate on the
Lateran. These materials have shown Kuntze’s life in an
entirely different light. Above all, it has proved neces-
sary to revise Olgierd Zagórowski’s interpretation of
Kuntze’s life and activity in Madrid and Valencia in the
period 1759-c.l765/’6, sińce the archival records rule
out any possibility of Kuntze having stayed in Spain at
this time, providing details to fili in this apparent gap in
his biography. It has also proved possible to establish
the exact number of Kuntze’s offspring, their precise
Christian names and exact dates of birth and death. It
may be stated with all certainty that Kuntze had nine
children and not two, three or a few morę as profferred
by previous sources.
