PRZEGLĄD LITERATURY I WYSTAW

1. Israel Silvestre, View of the "The church ofS. Dominico and
Fintę Branda", Siena. Engraving c. 1650, Romę, Gabinetto
Nazionale delle stampe.

together with some other coHeagues reconstructed the com-
plicated history of the Santuario di Santa Caterina in Fonte-
branda, which incorporates the former house in which the
saint lived and several oratories, including the Oratorio delT
Oca. Plenteous information is provided on the life of Ste.
Catherine, her record and how the cult of this famous daughter
of Siena first arose. Wolfgang Loseries deservesour gratitude
for providing extensive and original information concerning
the San Cristoforo church and its interiors. In his research he
was successful in, among other things, identifying certain
parts of the predella adorning the S. Giorgio altarpiece, pain-
ted by Sano di Piętro, as well as establishing the datę of its
origin to be somewhere during the 1450s. Mentioned above,
Stein-Kecks also wrote interestingly, but exhaustively on the
church of S. Desiderio, introducing in the process a series of
new assertions. Suitable space has been devoted to the Domi-
nicans’ Church in relation to its great size and wonderful
furnishings, thereby providing at last a sufficiently detailed
account of this building; but not only its architecture and
previously-mentioned Sodoma frescos, its sculptures, altar-
pieces and tabemacles, but also its superb chapels and excel-
lently preserved liturgical gowns. The richness of engravings
depicting the church’s characteristic mass as well as the great
variety of plans, designs etc. is remarkable. Morę detailed

study of Benedetto da Maiano’s beautiful, marble ciborium
originatingfrom the 1470swhich throughoutthecenturieshas
been moved to new sites on various occasions. Originally, as
Doris Carl recently suggested, it was possibly placed along
one of the presbytery walls; however, it is only at the present
time that research into Benedetto da Maiano, together with the
problematic subject of eucharist tabernacles is finał 1 y entering
a truły advanced phase.
Studying Hans Teubnefs texts on the architecture of S.
Domenico, those by Bruno Santi on sculpture and painting,
those of Marco Ciatti on parameters and finally of Max Seidel
on some of the great painted retabulae dating from the 15th
century and executed by artists such as Matteo di Giovanni,
and finally reading Peter Anselm Riedl investigations on the
iconography of St. Catherine’s chapel, it is easy to imagine
the erusite and new discoveries which will appear in the
successive volumes of Die Kirchen von Siena; above all in the
research dedicated to the Franciscan Church and the Cathe-
dra!.
There can be no doubting that the second part of Die
Kirche von Siena, with its superb graphics and vast storę of
information, Luigi Artini’s beautiful photographs and plans,
is one of the most va]uable publications in the field of art
history to appear the last few years.
