'THE GIANT THISTLES

appeared in THE STUDio about a year ago, iateiy
tieid a coUective exhibition at the Hagenbund
rooms. Naturaiiy it aroused much interest, both
because it was the hrst cohective exhibition they
had held in Vienna for some years, and because
of the intrinsic merits of the work done by
members of the socicty, for though many of
them have studied in France and other foreign
countries, the extraneous influences to which
they have thus been subjected have not affected
the individuality which marks the productions of
each of them, nor has the national character
common to ali of them been thereby obscured.

tones, to sunny Itaiy with
feathery trees against a
background of low hiiis,
or churches whose goiden
cupoias seem to vie with
thesun. Wyspianski, poet,
painter and craftsman, was
nervous, eager, restiess,
an incessant worker and
thinker, who seemed to
be ever hurrying as if
aware that his days were
numbered and much was
to be done in a short time.
He was very good in his
portraits of chiidren, and
aiso did some charming
iandscapes, bits of Gaiician
towns and country scenes.
His painting of TTz/cwT* recalis his versatiie
nature ; the stage is one which he himseif designed
for his own drama "Boleslaw the Boid," a play
turning upon an episode in Poiish history, and,
as was htting, the decorations also are nationai in
character. His stained-glass windows show great
power in design and richness and harmony in
colour; he was indeed a man who " touched
nothing he did not adorn." The ioss of two
such taiented men as Stanisiawski and Wyspianski
is a serious one indeed for Poiish art.

Two of the rooms were
very appropriately de-
voted to Jan Stanislawski
and Stanislaw Wyspianski,
two members who have
quite lately been snatched
away by death at an age
when they had only begun
to show their powers.
The former painted some
exquisite little landscapes,
genuine colour lyrics one
may call them. In his
wanderings the painter
passed through many
lands and has left behind
a rich collection of works
with culled from
widely different climes—
