OAK STATIONERY CABINET WITH BRASS HANDLES BY A. W. SIMPSON

work shown was completed by examples from the
brush of Sir Charies Holroyd, Professor C. J.
Hoimes, Mr. Alfred East, A.R.A., Mr. Oliver Haii
and Mr. A. W. Rich, and some remarkabie bronzes
by Kathieen Bruce. _

At Mr. John Baiiiie's Annuai Arts and Crafts
Exhibition such weii known jewellery-workers as
Mrs. Hadaway, Mrs. Arthur Gaskin, and Mr.
Haroid Stabier were represented at their best, and
the statuettes of Mr. Stabier, Mr. Reginaid Welis
and Miss Gwendoiine Wiiiiams were aii of an
important order. The Martin ware and the
Lancastrian iustre ware was in both cases of ex-
ceptional quaiity. The great variety of artistic and
ingenious toys sent from Vienna, some of which
have been iiiustrated in THE STUDio from tirne to
time, proved a source of great interest to every-
one. Mrs. Dora Stone's exquisitely-worked siik
pictures, and the water - coiour drawings by
Miiiicent Sowerby iliustrating " A Chiid's Garden
of Verses" and " Yesterday's Chiidren," gave a
charming interest to the waiis of the centre
room. Miss Jessie Bayes' iiiuminated inscrip-
tions and manuscripts grow more eiaborate and
successfui in treatment every year. Amongst
the many examples of good jeweliery we shouid
not overicok that of Mrs. Linneii, Mrs. Hiida
Keane, Misses Kirkpatrick, F. Stern, Giadys
Falcke, M. Audrey, and Margaret Ciatke; for
Mr. Baiiiie admitted nothing that was not of a
standard deserving praise.

Her Majesty the Queen has bought from the
Fine Art Society's gaiieries a water-coiour caiied
by Senor
Gustave Bacarisas, who held a smaii exhibition
there last month. He is a British subject but
of Spanish parents.

Mr. Marcus B. Huish, of the Fine
Art Society and Director of the New
Dudiey Galiery, heid in December,
at the latter place, an exhibition of
his own very skiifuiiy executed and
delightfui water - colours deaiing with
subjects in the Moray Firth and the
Sussex Downs.

The oii sketch by Mr. Frank Brang-
wyn, A.R.A., which we here reproduce
in coiours as a suppiement, represents
an eariy stage in the evoiution of the
panel which now finds a piace at the
Royai Exchange. The finai version has
aiready been reproduced in these pages aiong
with various sketches which also piayed a part in
its genesis.
ARLISLE.—The two articles in oak by
g Mr. A. W. Simpson shown on this
W . page were exhibited at the iast annuai
