DUTCH INFLUENCE IN EARLY
JAPANESE CARVINGS

One of the most interesting traces of the
Dutch commercial relations with Spain
during the Renaissance is to be found in
the ivory carvings, or netsukes, of the
period, five netsukes of this character are
exhibited in the collection loaned by Mr.
Edmund G. Hamersley to the Pennsylva-
nia Museum and School of Industrial Art,
ami are described by Mrs. Cornelius Ste-
venson in the Museum Bulletin for July.
The netsukes described range from 4I
inches in height to 2 inches, and in every
case but one the ivory is greatly discolored
with age. The carvings obviously repre-
sent Dutchmen, three of them bearing
birds (two of which arc cocks), the fourth
an animal and the fifth a flageolet. The
Dutchmen are all dressed in old-fashioned
costume, one of them even wearing a ruff,
which indicates that the figure dates at
least as far back as the Seventeenth cen-
tury.

The fact that two of the Dutchmen are
carrying cocks is worthy of notice, for the
association of Dutchmen and cocks is con-
stant in Japanese art, as is pointed out also
by Mr. Henri L. joly in his "Legend in
Japanese Art" (John Lane Company). The
birds represented in the netsukes in ques-
tion seem to be of the long-tailed Japanese
variety.

An interesting feature of the relations be-
tween the Netherlands and Japan is that
trade between the two countries was begun
as early as 1610, the year after the discovery
of the Hudson River by the adventurous
captain of the llalj Moon.
