ANNA SZABŁOWSKA

engraving which madę it possible to obtain interesting
textural effects.
In the graphic arts, Jabłczyński was fascinated with
chiaroscuro and value differentiation i.e. with effects
closer to painting than to the graphic arts. He often added
delicate colour to finished prints.
The most popular theme in his graphic works were
Polish, French and Italian architecture, as well as the
favoured convention of nocturnes. Jabłczyński treated
architectonic motifs with great freedom, and sought a
means of expression for his own, personal image of the
town. Eąually important were symbolic, fantastic and
grotesque figural compositions dealing with erotic, sa-
tanic and eschatological themes. The artist was inspired
by the graphics of O. Redon E. Munch and F. Rops but

predominantly by his own unusual imagination. Later
works tended toward an incresingly distinct visionary
art reflect his own painful experiences caused by isola-
tion due to a serious illness.
From a formal view point, the early stage of Jabł-
czyński’s works referred to the precepts of Impressio-
nism and the decorative linear compositions of the Se-
cessionism; in the 1920s, they already revealed an influ-
ence of avantgarde trends like Cubism.
Jabłczyński was a significant figurę both as an au-
thor and a popularizer in the development of the graphic
arts pursued by the Warsaw school. He was also a
long-standing participant of the exhibition movement,
and his works were displayed abroad in Austria, Germa-
ny, Italy and the Netherlands.
