this respect, the preparing of this catalogue as a list of works
executed by Rembrandt’s own hand would appear at the
present time to be an anachronism, and the Dutchmen’s work
- at least in relation to the question of attribution - will not
receive universal recognition as a cannon of knowledge about
the master’s works. The authors expect that around 240
Rembrandt paintings will be listed in the new catalogue, a
drastic reduction of the total number of paintings previously
attributed to the artist by W.von Bodę and C.Hofstede de
Groot (1897-1905) - 595 paintings, C.Hofstede de Groot
(1915) - 647, A.Bredius (1935) - 63 and H.Gerson (1968) -
420. Some of the most famous paintings no longer attributed
to Rembrandt include The man with a golden helmet, Br. 128;
ThePolishRider, Br. 279; David’s departure from Jonathan,
Br. 511; Davidplaying the harp before Saul, Br. 526 and The
descent from the Cross, Br. 551.
