brandt et Barra.
Nous aurions voulu pouvoir citer l'une ou l'autre de ces
deux-là, mais elles sont trop longues pour être donne'es tout
entières, et les couper serait détruire le mouvement et la gra-
dation habilement ménagés par l'auteur. D'ailleurs la seconde
touche à la politique, dont nous n'avons pas à nous occuper
ici.
Nous nous contenterons de citer la Fuite en Egypte, non
pas comme la meilleure, mais comme la plus courte et comme
une de celles qui s'ajustent le mieux aux habitudes de cette
revue. Elle donne d'ailleurs une idée très suffisante du talent
sobre et fin de M. André Lemoyne.
J'aime un petit tableau d'un vieux maître flamand : —
Sur le tablier bleu de la vierge Marie,
L'œil clos, mais souriant de sa bouche fleurie,
Repose, nimbé d'or, un blond Jésus dormant ;
Et le bon saint Joseph, dont la barbe grisonne,
Vêtu comme un ancien marinier de Harlem.
Dans sa barque conduit l'enfant de Bethléem
Et la mère, une chaste et robuste Frisonne.
Où sont-ils?... Sur un bras de la Meuse, à Dordrecht.
Ses deux ailes en croix, un moulin près du fleuve
Tourne... et patiemment au fil des eaux s'abreuve,
Droite sur un seul pied, la cigogne au long bec.
Un lourd cheval de Gueldre, au chemin de halage,
Aidant la grosse voile où le vent s'arrondit,
Tire, naseaux fumant... la corde se raidit...
On aperçoit au fond le clocher d'un village.
Le maître a peint son œuvre en fervent chroniqueur. —
Qu'importent le pays, le costume ou l'époque.
Si dans les souvenirs que son génie évoque
On reconnaît sa main, sa lumière et son cœur.
C'est la scène que représente le dessin de M. de Bellée.
